THINK PPE

Personal protective equipment, sometimes known as PPE, is necessary for crew and those on board and has the ability to protect users from a wide range of potential dangers, such as falling, slipping, cutting, burning, and being exposed to toxins.

Injury Prevention & Health Protection:

The primary purpose of wearing PPE is to prevent or minimise the risk of injuries and accidents. PPE acts as a physical barrier between the wearer and potential hazards, such as falling objects, chemicals, extreme temperatures, sharp objects, or other physical dangers. PPE can also safeguard the health of individuals. For instance, respiratory protection, such as masks or respirators, can prevent the inhalation of harmful particles or airborne contaminants. Protective clothing, such as life jackets or immersion suits, can aid in preventing drowning or hypothermia in emergencies.

Hazard Mitigation & Risk Reduction:

PPE helps to mitigate specific hazards that are present in the yachting industry. For example, wearing safety helmets protects against head injuries from falling objects; safety glasses or goggles shield the eyes from debris or chemical splashes; and gloves provide hand protection against cuts, burns, or chemical exposure. By wearing PPE, the overall risk of accidents and injuries can be significantly reduced. While it is essential to implement other safety measures and practises, PPE serves as an essential last line of defence against potential hazards.

Compliance with Regulations:

Wearing PPE is often a legal requirement in many jurisdictions and regulatory bodies and industry standards mandate the use of specific PPE in certain work environments to ensure the safety and well-being of employees. Non-compliance can lead to penalties, fines, or legal liabilities.

Enhanced Safety Culture:

By consistently wearing PPE, individuals demonstrate their commitment to safety, which can influence and inspire others to adopt safe practices. It fosters a proactive mindset and emphasises the importance of protecting oneself and others from potential hazards.

Confidence and Peace of Mind:

When individuals wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), it instils a sense of confidence and peace of mind among both crew members and passengers. This allows individuals to focus on their tasks without constantly worrying about potential risks and injuries. PPE provides a sense of security that contributes to a more productive and comfortable work environment. However, it is important to remember not to become complacent. While PPE is effective at mitigating the risk of injury, it cannot completely eliminate exposure to potential risks and dangers.
